A journey of discovery...
igniting the spirit of inquiry...

Learning happens when....

Learners are empowered to take ownership over their learning.

Teaching the knowledge and skills alongside facilitating the learning of trust, ownership, roles and responsibilities..

Learn more

Students become collaborators in the design and management of their learning space.

Students learn through their own self-directed exploration and discovery and through the being a part of the development a coaching culture.

Learners take responsibility

Students have to be trained in coaching, appraising and supporting one another; Through learners willingnly developing key roles within the learning process, being central in self and peer review, students make the discovery, they are the ones that make it happen!

Winter Soiree

Events such as the Winter Soiree, focusses on collaborative learning across disciplines & concludes with the marketting and selling of an interdiscplinary event to both the school community, and local business.

Students learning collaboratively

Students are co constructers in their learning empowered to take responsibility for how learning happens best.

--> Produced by students

Overall the approach is about synthesis of knowledge, enquiry and collaboration; Learning then becomes a way of behaviour.

“The question is ‘what does this look like’? To the untrained eye: a good play session, an interesting chaos! Then, it’s the role play of teams... collaboration, student centred, project based working, where students are actively exploring and working together to seek answers, and solutions and create outcomes. ”
Learning happens with a sense of responsibility (that can be managed) and a spirit of enquiry. The teacher needs to give responsibility in a manner that is regulated and targets learners in order to differentiate and challenge.

Fantastic Zooniverse - Primary Project

Students are often self-conscious and feel awkward about practical work..

Games are a good way to combat this: they encourage team work and spatial awareness, physical and verbal co ordination, rhythm and timing. Good games are completely involving and participants forget they are honing these skills.

Groups need access to space which can be theirs for the duration of a devising process..

..to gather all their material together, and to work with focus. Learners are encouraged to create visual material: collages, paintings, sketches or even junk sculptures which can help to refine ideas about the look of a piece/product, the space it will inhabit, atmosphere, colours and weight.

It is important to keep detailed records as the work is happening.

This is part of the ongoing research and exploration, and helps a group to define, structure and assess their devising process as it is happening.Video and stills cameras record rehearsals, and students take turns at keeping detailed notes and sketches. Learners are encouraged to notetakewhile discussions and improvisations are actually happening. These notes can become a detailed group record to be accessed by all the students.!

Interactive Media

Within Digital Media sessions students have been introduced to a range of activities essential to the development and delivery of media-based outcomesincluding research, ideas development, the use of technical skills and evaluation. Focus skill based workshops, lead into student developing design proposals, giving and receiving peer feedback and utilising the development cycle, whether it is to design an App, an NFT business, a website or a fashion lookbook, students are encouraged to be creativeand use a variety of both physical and digital mediums, applications and processes in order to create interesting and effective outcomes.

PICTURES AT AN EXHIBITION

Collaborating across year groups, Performing Arts, ICT and Arts students created an interactive exhibition of IGCSE Art work, each piece of art, accompanied with a live musical performance composed by students in response to the art. Video projection and a pathway around the space made of graphical scores of the music decorated the venue. Students have taken on roles such as curator, compere, script writer, composer, technical manager, lighting designer, video producer and more... in order to realise their collaborative vision.

ORIENTATION DESIGN AND DELIVERY

At each new phase of learning...

I aim to provide students with an orientation process that eases transition from one stage to the next. All tasks centre around the notion of nurturing enquiring minds so that students become inquisitive learners and are eager to find things out for themselves... Workshops are delivered with emphasis on different learning behaviours that I want to encourage and develop in our young people. Students are involved in activities that require them to spot patterns, notice details and make links, learn how to plan their ideas out and use their peers to review and refine before completion. Questioning underpins all the activities and students are encouraged to get “stuck” and then work together to find a solution.

This collaborative approach encourages ......

students to learn from each other as much as from tutors. In addition to workshops I deliver a number of team building challenges which develop the key learning behaviours in a fun and entertaining way! Students have told me that they really enjoy this aspect of the orientation and find it a useful way to think about their learning. My design of induction process is not simply a two day event. It is a process that continues throughout the year, bringing students together at key points in their learning to stretch and challenge their minds.
